The essentials in 30 seconds
- Copilot in PowerPoint generates an entire presentation from text or a Word/PDF file in a few seconds.
- Gemini in Slides offers a similar approach, simpler but integrated into the Google ecosystem.
- Time savings: 60 to 80% on creating slides from scratch; the human value-add remains on storytelling and personalization.
- Main limitation: visuals (images, icons) remain weakly contextual; the final formatting requires manual intervention.
- Best use: first versions, report slides, recurring presentations (steering meetings, monthly reviews).
The problem
Creating a professional PowerPoint presentation takes on average 3 to 5 hours for a manager: thinking about the outline, writing the text, formatting, searching for images, harmonizing the design. Yet 70% of this time is devoted to formatting tasks that have no differentiating value. The result: slides that are too dense, a diluted message, and recurring frustration with the tool.
Create weekly report presentations, quarterly reviews, executive committees — often from the same templates, for recurring audiences.
Must personalize pitches for each prospect, adapt the content to the sector, the contact, the stakes — time-consuming but essential work.
Produce summary deliverables at the end of an assignment or sprint: a lot of content, little time, high quality requirements.
The AI solution
Copilot in PowerPoint and Gemini in Google Slides make it possible to delegate the mechanical part of slide creation to AI. Both approaches converge on the same principle: describe what you want, and AI produces a structured first draft that you only have to refine.
Generation from a text prompt
In PowerPoint with Copilot, open a new file, click the Copilot icon and type: "Create a 10-slide presentation on [topic] for [audience] with a [formal / casual] tone". Copilot generates a complete outline with titles, body text and formatting suggestions in 15 to 30 seconds. In Google Slides, the approach is similar via the "Help" → "Ask Gemini" menu.
Generation from an existing document
This is the most powerful use case. Copilot can read a Word document, a PDF or a OneNote note stored in OneDrive and create a structured presentation based on that content. Command: "Create a presentation from [file name]". Gemini does the same from a Google Doc via the "Convert to Slides presentation" command.
Slide-by-slide improvement
Once the first draft is generated, work slide by slide. Select a slide and ask Copilot: "Summarize this text into 3 key points", "Rephrase this title to make it more impactful", "Add a concrete example to illustrate this point". This incremental approach produces results far superior to a single-pass generation.
Implementation
Our 4-step method to produce a professional presentation in 30 to 45 minutes with AI:
Prepare the brief (5 min)
Before opening PowerPoint, write a brief in a few lines: topic, audience, desired number of slides, tone, key messages (3 maximum). This preliminary work determines 80% of the quality of the result. A vague prompt will give a generic result; a precise prompt will give a solid base.
Generate the first draft (5 min)
Use the brief to create the presentation via Copilot or Gemini. Evaluate the generated outline: does the structure tell a logical story? If not, ask for a restructuring: "Reorganize these slides to follow a Situation-Complication-Resolution outline". Never settle for a first draft without critically evaluating it.
Refine the content (15 min)
Go through each slide and improve the texts that are too long or too vague. Use Copilot commands to rephrase, summarize or enrich. Add figures, concrete examples, quotes that Copilot cannot invent. This is where your expertise brings the real value-add.
Design and finalization (10 min)
Apply your company theme, check the visual consistency, replace the generic images with relevant ones. Use PowerPoint Designer to optimize the layout of complex slides. Proofread in presentation mode. Contact us for tailored training.

Frequently asked questions
Can Copilot create a complete presentation from a Word document?
Yes. In PowerPoint, you can use the "Create a presentation from a file" command and point to a Word document or a PDF stored in OneDrive. Copilot generates a slide outline based on the document's structure (titles, subtitles, paragraphs). The result is generally 8 to 15 slides depending on the length of the document. It is then recommended to manually rework the outline and the visuals, as Copilot does not yet select images contextually.
What is the difference between Copilot in PowerPoint and Designer?
PowerPoint Designer (included in Microsoft 365) offers visual layouts for one slide at a time, based on the existing content. Copilot goes further: it can generate text content, rewrite titles, suggest the structure of an entire presentation and adapt the tone (formal, casual, technical). Designer remains useful for the design of an individual slide, while Copilot is an assistant for content and structure.
Is Google Gemini in Slides as capable as Copilot in PowerPoint?
As of March 2026, Copilot in PowerPoint remains more advanced for generating long and complex presentations. Gemini in Google Slides generates short presentations (5-10 slides) well but is less capable on advanced formatting and custom themes. Gemini compensates with better integration with Google Docs and Drive, allowing you to create a presentation directly from a Docs document with a result that is often consistent.
For tech profiles
Technical comparison of AI capabilities in presentation tools:
| Feature | Copilot (PowerPoint) | Gemini (Google Slides) |
|---|---|---|
| Generation from prompt | Yes — up to 20 slides | Yes — up to 15 slides |
| Generation from file | Word, PDF, OneNote (OneDrive) | Google Docs, Drive |
| Automatic formatting | Integrated Designer | Predefined themes only |
| Content rewriting | Slide by slide, adjustable tone | Slide by slide |
| Image suggestions | Microsoft stock, weakly contextual | Google images, weakly contextual |
| Company theme | Respects the active theme | Respects the active theme |
| API / automation | Graph API, Copilot Studio | Apps Script, Workspace API |
If you produce the same types of presentations every week or every month (sales review, project report, dashboard), you can automate the generation via Power Automate (Microsoft) or Google Apps Script. The typical workflow: trigger (new data file in SharePoint / new sheet updated) → call to the Copilot/Gemini API → generation of the presentation → sending by email. Estimated gain: 1 to 2 hours per recurring report. See our augmented office productivity offering for support on this automation.
